Along with the mineral Iodine, selenium is the most important mineral that affects thyroid function. Your thyroid gland is the most selenium rich organ in the body by far. Your thyroid produces hormones called T3 and T4. These hormones are so named because of the number of iodine molecules found on each hormones molecular structure. Proper thyroid function requires these hormones to be converted from a 4 iodine containing structure (T4) to a 3 iodine containing structure(T3). Selenium is a cofactor in the conversion from T4 to T3.
Without sufficient levels of selenium present in the body, proper activation of thyroid hormones cannot occur. Selenium deficiencies are commonly found in individuals with thyroid related disorders. Researchers have suggested that regular supplementation of selenium may help and assist the proper conversion of T4 to T3 and promote optimal thyroid function.
In addition, selenium assists in protecting the thyroid gland itself. T4 and T3 production produces compounds called peroxides as a by-product. These peroxides are inherently unstable and can lead to oxidation of tissues. Selenium is known to protect the cells in thyroid tissue from the oxidative damage of these peroxides.
Selenium is also a cofactor in 10 additional enzymatic reaction found throughout the body. The most important of these is the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme works with Glutathione, your body’s master antioxidant, to protect tissue from the damaging effects of free radicals. What’s a free radical? Free radicals are scavenger cells that look to “steal” electrons from your cells. This process can lead to oxidation and premature aging. Glutathione peroxidase, therefore, is contingent on adequate supply of selenium.
Selenium is typically found highest in seafoods, organ meats, and beef and chicken, as well as brazil nuts. Dietary supplementation of selenium can be a very effective way of ensuring sufficient selenium to perform critical metabolic functions.
Selenomethionine is an amino acid containing Selenium, a vital trace mineral critical for healthy thyroid function and antioxidant activity. Selenomethionine contains 200 mcg of selenium per serving and is optimized for higher bioavailability and absorption. Our selenium is manufactured with the highest standards, is gluten and dairy free, and non-GMO. Supplemental selenium is great way to feel better, stronger, and healthier.
